Learn More >You can apply for a motorcycle instruction permit at age 14 in the State of North Dakota. However, if you do not have a valid license, you will be required to take the standard Class D driver's license written test before you can take the written exam for your Class M motorcycle endorsement. Additionally, if you are under 16, you will have to enroll in a state-approved motorcycle safety course. Once you receive your permit, it will be valid for six months and you will be restricted to daytime riding without passengers.

To obtain your permit, you will first have to self-certify the type of commercial vehicle that you will be driving or intend to drive, as well as what type of commerce you will be conducting and that you pass any applicable medical requirements. This self-certification process will determine what type of license you require (Class A, B, or C).
Once it has been determined what license you need, you will be given the CDL general knowledge exam, which covers road rules, trucking regulations, vehicle maintenance, and safe driving techniques. If you pass your written knowledge test, you will receive a permit. This permit will allow you to operate a commercial vehicle while supervised by a licensed instructor in the State of North Dakota.
